British standout and Vanderbilt graduate student-athlete Divine Oladipo, the Commodores' program record holder in the shot put after previously being an NCAA Division 1 finalist at both Connecticut and Ohio State, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss making her debut Feb. 26 at the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships at Texas A&M. Oladipo shares her excitement about competing against Latavia Maines of Tennessee and Ana da Silva of Georgia and her ambition to produce a mark of 60-0.50 (18.30m) that would merit consideration from Great Britain for her to compete March 18-20 at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade, Serbia. Oladipo revisits achieving the school record 58-9.50 (17.92m) in her Vanderbilt debut Jan. 15 at the Commodore Indoor Invitational and the impact she hopes to have made on the team. She reflects on spending the fall in Nashville training and being mentored by Vanderbilt associate head coach Ashley Kovacs, along with receiving advice from World Champion and Olympic silver medalist Joe Kovacs, and how beneficial that has been in her development. Oladipo examines the growth of the throws group in Nashville, including collegiate and professional athletes, and how significant it has been for her to be challenged on a daily basis by some of the elite competitors in the world. She analyzes the opportunities to compete this winter against U.S. Olympian Jessica Ramsey and Jamaican Olympian Danniel Thomas-Dodd in events at Vanderbilt and how those matchups have prepared her well for the upcoming championship meets. Oladipo expresses gratitude for the support the track and field program has received from the school administration and recognizes the guidance of program head Althea Thomas in mentoring the student-athletes and a new coaching staff. She explains how meaningful it will be to reconnect with former Ohio State teammate and reigning Division 1 indoor and outdoor shot put champion Adelaide Aquilla at the NCAA championship meet March 11-12 at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala., in addition to sharing how much she learned from last year's British Outdoor Championships to prepare her better for the upcoming outdoor season. Oladipo also speaks about her pursuit of a second Master's degree in Human Development at Vanderbilt after already completing her Bachelor's degree in Economics at Connecticut and Master's degree in Accounting at Ohio State.
